Laura Strom - Trauma Specialist - butterlfy in handLaura Strom

I spent a total of five years working for Stanford involved in clinical research trials testing a short-term treatment that helped people heal from horrific traumas. Total treatment time is usually less than 20 sessions. As a result of a half decade of superb training from Stanford, I know exactly what to do to get you feeling better fast.

In my 40s I had the opportunity to return to school and pursue a degree in counseling. As fate would have it, in my first internship, at a middle school in a violent neighborhood in San Francisco, I met a researcher from Stanford. Victor Carrion, MD, child psychiatrist, and director of the Stanford Early Life Stress Research Program wanted to test a 15-18 session protocol he developed for children who had been through trauma. After two years with Dr. Carrion as an intern, I was eventually hired as one of two therapists in his much larger three-year clinical research trial.

“Stanford Cue-Centered Treatment: A multi-modal approach for youth experiencing posttraumatic symptoms” is a 15-18 session intervention with results published in a peer-reviewed journal, and a book and training are forthcoming. Children had a 65% decrease in posttraumatic symptoms very rapidly. They had huge drops in anxiety and depression. This treatment can also be done with adults.

If trauma has changed your life, and is affecting you on a daily basis, please consider making contact with me. You can send me an email, or if you feel ready, take a bigger step, and schedule a consultation with me to discuss your situation.

Thursday the Wonder Dog

Thursday the Wonder DogAt times I bring my dog, Thursday, to work. If you are comfortable with dogs, she can come into the therapy room with us where she will enjoy petting, and take a nap while we talk. Otherwise, I sometimes leave her in the office which is a separate space. She is a very nice, well behaved, medium-length fur dog. She is bathed weekly, and has soft fur. Thursday was a pound puppy rescue in 2009. If you are afraid of dogs, this gentle dog might help you heal.
